Liveblogging the Convention

Biden's speech began with lovely tributes to his family, including his mother, of whom he said:

My mother's creed is the American creed: no one is better than you. You are everyone's equal, and everyone is equal to you.

Biden ends by using his authority on foreign policy to detail how Obama's foreign policy judgment has time and again been correct while McCain has been wrong. Biden's foreign policy judgment will not be substituted for Obama's; instead, his credibility will be used to affirm Obama's judgment.

John McCain was wrong, and Barack Obama was right -- again, and again, and again, on the most important national security issues of our time, John McCain was wrong and Barack Obama has been proven right.

And here comes Obama, introduced by Biden's wife Jill.

McCain's PUMA ad blitz: Who is "Debra"?

Wed Aug 27, 2008 at 07:40:25 PM PDT

Who is she? Who is the carefully groomed and scripted Debra Bartoshevich in McCain's new ad "Debra"?

Is she a lifelong Democrat, a Hillary backer who switched to McCain because Obama lacks "experience"? That is what she and her PUMA admirers claim. But the YouTube video at the top of this post, an unscripted interview with a local reporter, tells a far different story. What lifelong Democrat says, as she does repeatedly,  "Democrat party"?  And why was the McCain team already so poised to recruit her that she got a phone call from them "approximately three minutes" after Hillary Clinton's  June 5 concession speech?

Her strange journey to center stage of McCain's Democrat-switcher campaign began long before that campaign gleefully leaked to reporters their coup in persuading one of Wisconsin's Hillary Clinton delegates to pledge publicly she would vote for John McCain. Read on below the fold!

!! Obama Opens Lead in Florida- Mason-Dixon !!

Wed Aug 27, 2008 at 07:39:42 PM PDT

It's only a 45% to 44% margin but that's something in the biggest "pink" state and Mason-Dixon is respected in southern states including Florida.

which is worse, losing a child and wife or being a POW?

Wed Aug 27, 2008 at 07:33:18 PM PDT

I hope nobody thinks this is too cynical and overly analytical... but I'm watching Joe Biden's son bring tears to the eyes of convention goers with the recounting of the heroics of his father after his mother and brother were killed in a car wreck. It's definitely a touching story, and I've got to admit it touches me just as much or more so than the timeworn crosses in the sand 5 1/2 years of John McCain's POW story...

Top comments - Obama to battle for West Virginia

Wed Aug 27, 2008 at 07:12:42 PM PDT

For months I've said that the primary results in Appalachia had more to do with Sen. Hillary Clinton's popularity than any other factor. People here were familiar with her and they liked her fighting spirit.

There was a lot of people unfamiliar with the politicians and the region who declared there was no reason for Barack Obama to campaign in Appalachia and that he should write it off.

I thought that was wrong, that if he campaigns here, which he really didn't do in the primary, he had a chance of winning here.

We just found out Barack Obama apparently agrees with my view.

John McCain calls himself a maverick, but he votes with George Bush more than 90% of the time...that's not a maverick, that's a sidekick.

Tonight he is relaxing and enjoying the show.

South Carolinians for Obama  I need help

Wed Aug 27, 2008 at 07:00:30 PM PDT

I am a member of Veterans for Obama from Columbia SC and I have volunteered to have a "convention party" every day of the convention, well no one has bothered to RSVP or share a desire to experience the convention with "friends" or other Democtratic leaning progressives.

I was phoned today by a reporter from the State questioning me about the "convention party" and was wondering if it would be alright for him to stop by and interview any willing "convention goers" that desired to share their thoughts. I have sent out a new e mail to the group Veterans for Obama and have one reply that will be here.

Roman and Greek Temples, So UnAmerican, So Audacious

Wed Aug 27, 2008 at 06:58:37 PM PDT

A "story" has been circulating today about Obama supposedly having a Greek temple prop set up at the stadium where he will accept the nomination. A couple of AP reporters (AP again, interestingly enough) said that they saw some Greek looking structure, although no pictures seem to be available. According to the Obama campaign, it is a replica of a state capital. The Romans copied the Greek influence, and the modern world copied the Roman influence. The media doesn't believe it of course, I mean, a Greek temple is a Greek temple right? Where else are you going to see a Greek-looking structure? The McCain campaign is taking up their cue from the media, sensing another pile of shit to throw at the wall, and is going off on this, despite the fact that George W. Bush accepted his own nomination in 2004 on a set with a similar neoclassical theme, with columns rising on either side of him. Those idiotic AP reporters spew their crap, and the rest of the media believes them, without evidence of course. Take a look below at all of the other audacious ways in which people who hate America use Greek and Roman structures and symbolism. BTW, was there some campaign under way by the Netroots to really punish these reckless people at AP?

I just watched John Kerry kick McCain in the teeth (UPDATE 2, video and transcript)

Wed Aug 27, 2008 at 06:48:30 PM PDT

I'm speechless.

John Kerry just explained not only why I'm a Democrat, but why I don't trust Republicans on ANYTHING -- including their so-called strength: "national security".

I may be a little older than some of you.

I remember November 1963.

I remember Martin Luther King Jr.

I remember Bobby Kennedy and Eugene McCarthy.

Now we'll all remember Denver, August 27th, 2008.

Hi, all!

A couple of weeks ago, I requested the assistance of creative Kossacks, and promised that I'd share the results with the community for your use.

Well, I finally "got it" in terms of an idea for this shirt design, and I finished it off tonight.  Implementation, by the way, is WAY quicker than generating a damned idea!!

Hillary Clinton's Speech: Too little too late

Wed Aug 27, 2008 at 06:32:24 PM PDT

Nearly everyone agrees Hillary Clinton gave the speech of her political life last night, magnanimously urging her diehard supporters to back Senator Obama for president. She emphasized what all democrats know: it is in their best interests and America's to see Barack Obama elected. As her reference to the Supreme Court suggests, a McCain presidency has negative long-term ramifications and will spiral America further downward.

Last night, Clinton earned figurative pats on the back for singing harmony. This is like praising the virtue of someone who kicked you in the head but was kind enough to give you an ice pack for the headache. Had it not been for Clinton's near-Rovian performance those last months of the primary, this disunity would be a background mumble rather than a ferocious roar reverberating daily in every media outlet.

"He is ready to lead"

Wed Aug 27, 2008 at 06:31:15 PM PDT

Last night, following Hillary's wonderful speech, I wrote a diary with this very same title, noting that the one element that was unfortunately missing from Hillary's otherwise perfect speech was a full on endorsement of Obama's readiness and leadership ability.

Well, folks. Bill Clinton did it. And if this doesn't reassure Democrats, then nothing will. Bill and Hillary delivered a one-two punch.  Hillary set the stage. She urged her supporters to reject John McCain and support the party. Bill followed up by showing us why Obama is the one who needs to be President.

I'm not sure to what extent this was the plan. I suspect it was all along. Hillary and Bill would work together to reunite the party. And what an incredible job they did.

I think the most interesting thing about these last to nights is how effectively the Clintons united this party. Now, I think a lot of us Obama supporters were thinking, "boy, the Clintons really need to fix what they broke."
