          pinning down of "experts" like this segment showed.  All too often do talking points go unchallenged even when they are dubious, let alone when they're outright propaganda and lies.

          It so happened this was on TV, so naturally it ended up on youtube.  But the UK press have been doing this for YEARS to their politicians.  BBC Radio 4's "Today" program is a perfect example.  At 8:15 every weekday morning a politician gets grilled, and I do mean grilled.  He or she doesn't get to know what questions will be asked beforehand, doesn't get to vet the questions, and doesn't get to crawl away from answering.  It's been like that for decades.

          In comparison Republicans in particular get a very easy ride in the traditional American media.  They get to put their talking points unchallenged, and more or less get to say what they want.  They don't get pulled up if they speak an obvious falsehood, they don't get forced to justify some of the more outlandish things they say.  The result is people like Bill O'Reilly who is in his own mind an expert on everything and perfectly willing to let his Republican guests lie through their teeth on an international (yes, they get Fox News in the UK, thanks to Murdoch-owned Sky TV) station.

          This isn't some interviewer wanting 5 minutes of youtube fame.  This is an interviewer DOING HIS JOB and pinning down an outlandish talking point into a requirement for justification, which showed the guy spewing out the talking point didn't have any idea what the justification should be - all he knew was the talking point, and that rapidly became blatently obvious.

          More interviewers should do this.  It's their JOB.

    I've posted three times now, attempting rational and level-headed arguments, and I simply can't do it anymore.  Too stressful.  Last night, I even had someone refer to me as "Sweet Tits," and then that entry simply disappeared... not sure if it was a moderator, or whether the poster simply reconsidered.  It did inspire me, though, to make calls to Kentucky this weekend.

    As I said, I needed that.  Thank you for lifting my spirits, and putting me in the proper frame of mind for phone calls for Obama this weekend.

    But the good news is, the writer said she supported and was voting for Obama. That's the huge silver lining.

    I have listened to PB for decades. Even when I was a member of "the other party" I found some of his invective to be offensive, divisive and, yes, racist.

    However -- there is something else to be said. As off the wall as he usually is, he occasionally gets it right. That doesn't mean I like him or respect his positions. But he's there, big as life, and impossible to ignore (at least for me, since I have started watching Morning Joe). Rachel Maddow consistently rips him to shreds, but he never takes it personally.

    So what I'm saying is, as problematic as he is, he is interesting to watch when he's not spouting the Republican meme. Notice that he often plays devil's advocate, even when he knows he's wrong. He will usually laugh after the exchange is over (and part of that is the realization that he's wrong).

    Again, maybe I'm just waxing nostalgic ... but that's what I see. Please understand -- I'm not defending PB -- he is indefensible. Yet, I find him interesting, at times. (I'd rather listen to him than Limbaugh, Coulter, O'Reilly, Kristol or Bennett. I have also enjoyed Eleanor Clift ripping PB to shreds on the McGloughlin Group.)

        In all other circumstances, they let the comments slide.

        This guy represents the GOP and much of what we hear in our country- misinformed and talking point driven. If it can't fit in a single sentence (or bumper sticker), its not worth talking about. Some stuff can't fit on a bumper sticker, some stuff can.  So lets use the simple approach when it fits.  

        Rather than say the "we our outraged that the president on a international setting chose...[two more paragraphs]"

        Say, "It appears the president and his followers don't know the difference between talking with someone a appeasing them and that's why we're in the mess we're in."

        Even shorter, "talking to someone doesn't mean your appeasing them."

        The GOP has been very effective at the bumper sticker strategy, we need to do the same.

      It reminds me of when Matthews went after the Obama supporter who didn't know any of his legislative accomplishments. Matthews was happy with taking him down, but never once got out any of Obama's actual accomplishments, because that was never the point.

      These guys have no interest in getting the truth out to people - it's a spectator sport.

      That is why Buchanan is still around - he brings ratings. The truth is irrelevant.

    The puerile trashing of 60 years of diplomatic and political tradition in the U.S. is a sea change.

    I think she'll run Tuesday and then bow out. She and her husband need to be statesmen now, not street fighters. I'm not saying it will or won't happen, but this should spark their better judgement.
